The department gained more operational strength following the government announcement in January 1989, encouraging religious organizations to actively participate in educational projects.

The Archdiocese of Mwanza makes a significant contribution to the development of people through education, thanks to the various schools within the diocese.

Goals of the Education Department:

  1. To Revive the Establishment of Secondary Schools: To oversee the academic and moral development of students.

  2. To Encourage the Establishment of Vocational Training: In every parish, with the aim of reducing the social and economic challenges faced by students who have completed primary education but are unable to continue to secondary education or teaching training.

Education Committee of the Archdiocese

The department has an education committee that meets four times a year to discuss reports related to school finances and administration, along with other education-related issues. This committee interprets and implements the vision and mission of the Archdiocese concerning education.

Pastoral Vision

The structure of the Education Committee reflects a pastoral approach. In addition to the two seminaries (Mt. Mary Seminary, Nyegezi, and St. Joseph Seminary, Mwanza), other schools have regulations aimed at developing the holistic student. Emphasis is placed on both academic and moral excellence, and any deviations are addressed promptly. There is a communal prayer session, which is not denomination-specific and can be participated in by students of all secondary schools in the Archdiocese.

Spiritual Retreats and Practices

Spiritual retreats and exercises are regularly organized, involving both Catholic students and teachers, to nurture good spiritual and moral character in participants.

Leadership

The department is led as follows:

  • Director: Rev. Fr. Bernadin Mtula
  • Executive Secretary: Mr. Renatus Malimo

This structure highlights the importance of quality education that incorporates vocational training, moral values, and spiritual growth for students in the Archdiocese of Mwanza.
