Health Department

The Health Department was officially established in 1990 by His Grace Bishop Antoni Mayala with the aim of coordinating and strengthening all health activities within the Archdiocese of Mwanza. The health activities involve the areas of Prevention, Treatment, and Training, with the Archdiocese running various institutions and projects as follows:

1. Health Institutions

Hospitals:

  • Bukumbi Hospital (Misungwi District)
  • Sumve Designated Hospital (Kwimba District)

Dispensaries:

  • Buhingo Dispensary
  • Nyakahoja Dispensary
  • Nyegezi Dispensary

2. Preventive Projects

The Health Department oversees the following projects:

  • Community Primary Health
  • HIV/AIDS Control Project
  • Blindness Prevention Project

3. Training Colleges

The Health Department manages two training colleges offering certificate-level education in Nursing and Midwifery:

  • Bukumbi Training College
  • Sumve Training College

4. Activities of the Health Department

The Health Department carries out the following responsibilities:

  • Coordinating, implementing, and evaluating all health-related activities within the Archdiocese of Mwanza.
  • Serving as a link between the Archdiocese, the government, non-governmental organizations, and donors.
  • Overseeing policy matters and implementation through the Archdiocesan Health Board.

5. Pastoral Activities

Health services are provided in alignment with the Church structure, from the national level to small Christian communities. The Health Department believes it continues the work initiated by Jesus Christ, and it is the responsibility of every baptized person to care for the sick.

Spiritual Services:

  • Each hospital has a chaplain (priest) responsible for providing spiritual care to patients and staff.
  • Where a priest is unavailable, spiritual services are offered by other Church ministers.

All services are provided in adherence to Catholic Medical Ethics.
