First of all, we thank God for granting us life and good health to reach this day as we prepare this history of the Catholic Faith here in Nsumba, which has given us a clear understanding of when this faith arrived here.

This history is divided into four periods:

1. The period of the missionaries upon their arrival.

2. The period of the church during the dark times.

3. The period of the church during the light and decline.

4. The period of the church that stood and continued to the present day.

**THE ARRIVAL OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH IN NSUMBA:**

In 1940, at that time the Archdiocese of Mwanza was called the Vicarage of Mwanza, led by Bishop Anton Oomeni. The missionaries from Africa arrived in the Nsumba area and met with the local rulers known as wanangwa, specifically Deus Gembe and Mwinula. The missionaries were warmly received and later explained that they had come to spread the religion, thus they needed a place to build a Church and a School. After discussions, the missionaries succeeded in being allocated a large area of 31 acres, and they began constructing a Church and a Catechist’s house.

They also planted various trees, including fruit and non-fruit trees. The construction of a small stone church along with the Catechist’s house was completed, and the Church officially began in 1941. The entire Kiseke, Nyasaka, and Buswelu region gathered here every Sunday for worship. Later, the missionaries began to assess the area to see how they could build a school.
