Mahina was established by German missionaries in 1891. They brought Stephano Mlingwa Busomile in 1945, making him the fifth catechist of this congregation from the Bujashi area, and handed over a piece of land measuring fifteen acres for church activities.

In 1989, this congregation was handed over to the Nyakato Parish under Father William Moron, a missionary from Africa, with a total of five families praying in the stone church built by the missionaries at that time.

On June 14, 1991, Archbishop Anthony Petro Mayala laid the foundation stone for this congregation, and construction of the church began under Father Lini, the parish missionary of Nyakato. The number of believers increased, and they began to worship in that church.

In 2007, the Kigango cha Mahina gave rise to the Ihago congregation, which is in the Mahina Parish, and the Nyanguruguru congregation, which is in the Mhandu Parish.

Recognizing the importance of having many workers in the Lord’s field, this congregation has trained the following as catechists: 1. Maria Hamisi (who is currently ill), 2. Frola Misalaba (serving in Ihago), 3. Zephania Kahema (in Biharamulo), 4. Joseph Kazungu (serving in Mahina).

Chairpersons: The first chairperson who oversaw the initial church construction was Maria Hamisi, followed by Ponsiani Fumbuka, who managed the establishment of the Ihago and Nyanguruguru congregations. Lukas Masama fought hard for the recovery of the church land since after the death of catechist Stephano, there was illegal selling of church land, and now only four acres remain. Brother Crement Michael held the chairmanship for a short time but left a good reputation for maintaining church records. Eventually, Bitrice Muta was elected in 2013 and has served for six years until today when we are launching this parish.

In 2014, Archbishop Yuda Thadeus Ruwaichi elevated the status of the congregation, making it a sub-parish under Father Anselem Somuda of the Nyakato Parish.

In 2017, Archbishop Yuda Thadeus Ruwaich elevated the Mahina sub-parish to a mission parish under the leadership of Father Nanah of Nyakato.

On December 3, 2018, Father Canisius Milango was appointed as the parish priest of the Mahina mission parish by the then-designate Bishop of the Mwanza Archdiocese, Bishop Renatus Leonard Nkwande.

To continue strengthening the church’s workforce, in 2019 the mission parish successfully trained catechist Daud Pondi.

Today, on October 28, 2019, our parish is being officially inaugurated and consecrated by Archbishop Renatus Leonard Nkwande, Archbishop of the Mwanza Archdiocese, entrusting this parish under the intercession and supervision of Saints Simon and Jude. The Ihago congregation has eighteen communities and four neighborhoods, while the Kigango cha Mahina has twenty-three communities and four neighborhoods.

Saints Simon and Jude, pray for us.
